ASCENT | Not Let Fall
This piece became more complex than its scale suggested.
At one stage, the form kept leaning toward the image of an eagle in ascent.
Around those same days, I realized I had a bird trapped in my house for two days.
The coincidence stayed with me, though I never wanted the piece to settle into something that literal.
So I kept cutting back and changing the use of the chains.
At first they came too close to broken links, to a more obvious idea of freedom.
I moved away from that.
What remained was not the bird, but the sensation of flight:
lift, suspension, weight still carried.
The amber stays in that same register.
Its shape feels wild, almost alive.
What matters to me is that openness.
A piece does not need to begin with a fixed meaning to arrive somewhere true. Sometimes it takes shape through process, intuition, and what appears along the way, while still remaining open enough for others to read it from their own place.
